Bear Hug

Stomp on the attacker’s foot to loosen his grip. Then, drop your weight down into a horse riding stance as you lift your arms up to break the attacker’s hold. Then, reach under the attacker’s right arm with your right arm and grab his shoulder. Grab his right wrist with your left hand. Pull the attacker’s right arm across your body to your left hip as you lower your weight to the ground, causing the attacker to fall

Early influences of Tang Soo Do

Grandmaster Hwang Kee’s development of Tang Soo Do was influenced by three martial arts. Taekkyon, Karate and Chinese Martial Arts (Kung Fu). 

International Taekwondo

International Taekwondo is the martial arts organization that brought us Yul Gok and Chung Mu. Grandmaster Blackburn held a 2nd degree blackbelt in this organization.


Shotokan is the name given to Gichin Funakoshi’s specific style of Karate. “Shoto” was a pen name for Gichin Funakoshi. “Kan” means house or place. So, Shotokan is the place where Shoto’s style is taught.


“Achievement through great effort.” Kung Fu is used as an umbrella term for all martial arts of Chinese origin. 


“Gentle Art.” Jujutsu is an ancient Japanese martial art and a precursor to Judo, Aikido and Brazilian Jiujitsu. Jujutsu was originally taught to Samurai as a method of unarmed combat. Since striking is ineffective against an opponent wearing armor, many throws, locks and controlling techniques were taught in Jujutsu


Meaning, “Martial Way” in Japanese, Budo a general term for all traditional martial arts. Do means "way of life". Modern budo has no external enemy, only the internal enemy, one's ego that must be controlled.
