Hard vs. Soft Martial Arts Styles

Hard martial arts focus primarily on forceful strikes or blows. Soft styles usually focus on deflecting or redirecting an attacker’s force to his or her disadvantage.

“Traditional”

The handing down of knowledge, beliefs and customs from one generation to another. 

Karate-do 

“Way of the Empty Hand.” In Okinawa, this martial art was called “T?de.” Gichin Funakoshi is credited with bringing Karate to Japan, where its popularity grew to the point that it is now considered a Japanese martial art.

Kung Fu

“Achievement through great effort.” Kung Fu is used as an umbrella term for all martial arts of Chinese origin. 

Judo 

“Gentle Way.” This Japanese martial art was developed by Dr. Jigoro Kano and was heavily influenced by Japanese Jujutsu.

Taekwondo

“Way of the Foot and Fist.” A Korean martial art developed during the same time as Tang Soo Do. 

Aikido

“Way of Union with Ki.” A Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba in 1942. Aikido emphasizes non-aggressiveness and harmony.
